Every demonstration record is tagged with GPS coordinates, then classified against satellite population grids and settlement data—so every site decision is backed by measurable geography, not guesswork.
The Technology
Each location in the dataset carries exact GPS coordinates and is classified against three independent scientific sources.
GHSL SMOD built-up layers, Kontur 400m population hexagons and WorldPop 100m census-disaggregated rasters are cross-referenced for every coordinate—density figures down to ~100m resolution.
Every point is labelled Urban, Peri-Urban or Rural using density thresholds calibrated to local settlement patterns. The reasoning behind each label is stored and auditable.
Full admin-region and district boundary layers let you aggregate any metric by geography—and drill from national overview down to a single settlement.
Data Sources
When the sources agree, confidence is high. When they disagree, the classification engine records which factors drove the final label.
The scientific gold standard. Satellite-derived settlement layers classify urban centres, dense clusters and rural areas on a globally consistent methodology.
High-resolution population hexagons that capture small settlements the coarser global grids miss—key for peri-urban fringe detection.
Census data disaggregated to 100m cells. Used as the validation layer for population estimates in ambiguous locations.
Base mapping plus official administrative boundaries for every region and district covered by the dataset.
Population Metrics
Figures computed on load from the Senegal pilot dataset—locations, households, people and their distribution across geographies.
